Meet Tracey & James

We are delighted to introduce Tracey and James, who recently completed their fostering assessment journey and became approved foster carers.

Their story highlights the dedication, commitment, and compassion that foster carers bring to the role, as well as the support available throughout the assessment process.

Taking the First Step

For Tracey and James, the decision to foster came from a desire to make a difference in the lives of children who need support.

“We knew there were so many children who needed help and support. We’ve always loved spending time with our nieces and nephews and thought fostering was something we would be good at.”

Like many people beginning their fostering journey, they experienced a mixture of excitement and nerves when they first made contact with our agency .

“We were nervous about the questions but also excited about the opportunity.”

A Supportive Assessment Journey

Before starting the assessment, Tracey had concerns about discussing difficult experiences from the past and how revisiting those memories might affect her emotionally.

“I was worried about talking about my past and how it would affect me. What surprised me was how supportive the assessor was. There was no judgement and it was okay to talk about.”

Looking back, Tracey and James describe the assessment process as thorough but necessary.

“It was long, but it had to be. We are going to be caring for children, so it is important that the process is thorough.”

Throughout the assessment, they felt well supported by their assessing social worker.

“We felt very supported throughout the whole process. Our assessing social worker was very helpful and understanding.”

Learning Through Training

One of the most valuable aspects of the journey was the training and preparation.

“The training was really informative. It prepared us for fostering and showed us what support is available.”

The sessions also helped them gain a deeper understanding of the experiences many children in care may have faced.

“We learned what children may have gone through and what you can and can’t do as a foster carer. It was really eye-opening.”

The assessment process also gave them greater confidence in their own abilities.

“We didn’t necessarily learn anything new about ourselves, but it did give us more confidence and reinforced that we are kind and loving people who have a lot to offer children and young people.

Looking Back

When reflecting on the journey to approval, there were no major surprises during the assessment itself, although discussing personal experiences could sometimes be difficult.

“Some parts could be triggering, but the support made all the difference.”

One thing that did surprise them was how quickly things moved once they had been approved.

“Once we were approved, everything happened so quickly.”

Life as Foster Carers

Receiving their approval was an exciting moment.

“We were excited when we got the confirmation.”

Now that they have started fostering, their experience has been much as they expected.

“It’s what we expected in terms of caring for a child. We’re looking forward to building trust and helping them feel settled and supported.”

Advice for Future Foster Carers

Tracey and James have a clear message for anyone thinking about fostering but feeling nervous about the assessment process.

“Don’t worry. The process is there to protect both you and the child. Be patient.”

They also emphasise the support available throughout your fostering journey.

“There is always someone at the end of the phone if you need advice or support. Don’t be afraid to reach out.”

And for those still wondering whether fostering is right for them?

“If your heart wants to do it, it’s the best thing.”
