At Foster Cares Ltd, a family-run fostering agency with over 25 years of experience in the North East and North West of England, we know fostering can change lives with the right support. Emmon, one of our dedicated foster carers since 2019, shares her fostering journey in the North East, focusing on unaccompanied asylum-seeking children. Her story shows the challenges, joys, and sense of belonging that come with fostering through our agency. If you’re in the North East or North West and thinking about fostering, Emmon’s experience could inspire you to take the first step.
Why Emmon Chose to Foster
Emmon started fostering six years ago, motivated by a need she saw in her community. “We noticed there weren’t many Muslim families fostering unaccompanied asylum-seeking children,” she says. “We understood their needs, like halal food, prayer, and cultural practices, so we wanted to help.” Since joining Foster Cares Ltd, Emmon has cared for children aged 14 to 16, providing a safe, welcoming home. She also offers respite care, stepping in when other foster carers need a break. “Last year, I looked after three asylum-seeking children and took on respite placements too,” she adds.
Our agency supported Emmon from the start, offering training and guidance to help her meet the children’s unique needs. This support makes fostering rewarding and manageable, even for those new to the role.
Tackling Challenges with Support
Fostering unaccompanied asylum-seeking children comes with specific challenges. Language barriers can make early days tricky. “At first, communication is hard,” Emmon explains. “We use Google Translate, point at things, or ask friends in the local Kurdish community for help.” Many children can’t read or write their native language, so Emmon and her family have learned some Kurdish words to bridge the gap. “The children pick up English quickly, which makes things easier,” she says.
Getting children into school mid-year is another hurdle, especially for those in Year 10 or 11. “Sometimes we arrange home tuition until the next school term,” Emmon notes. The visa process can also be stressful. Emmon works with a trusted solicitor in Middlesbrough to guide children through Home Office applications. “It’s a big relief when they get their visa. You see them start to settle,” she says.
Foster Cares Ltd helps Emmon navigate these challenges with regular check-ins, cultural sensitivity training, and a 24/7 support line. “The agency understands what these children need. They’re always there to help,” she says.
The Joys of Fostering
For Emmon, the best part of fostering is watching children grow. “Seeing them find their feet in a new country is amazing,” she says. “One lad learned so much English that we didn’t need a translator. Even his social worker was impressed.” Emmon celebrates every milestone, from passing driving tests to starting college or finding work. “When a child stays with us past 18 through Staying Put, or moves out with a job and friends, it feels like a real achievement,” she says.
These moments highlight why fostering with Foster Cares is special. Our close-knit community of carers shares advice and celebrates successes together, making every step of the journey feel supported.
Emmon’s Advice for New Foster Carers
Emmon encourages anyone considering UAS fostering to give it a go. “There are challenges, like language or cultural differences, but they’re not as hard as you think,” she says. “Halal food is easy to find, with takeaways and supermarkets stocking it everywhere. The children adapt quickly, and they know they’re in a safe place.” Her advice to potential carers in the North East and North West? “It’s rewarding work. If you’re thinking about it, talk to Foster Cares Ltd. They’ll support you every step of the way.”
