Step 1: Initial Enquiry

The first step to becoming a foster carer with Foster Cares Ltd is to get in touch with us. Whether you call, email, or fill out our online enquiry form, our friendly Recruitment Social Worker, Louise, will be on hand to answer any initial questions you may have.

During this chat, we will:

  • Provide an overview of fostering
  • Explain the process
  • Discuss your motivations for fostering

This is a relaxed and informal conversation designed to help you decide if fostering is right for you. If you feel ready to take the next step, we will arrange a home visit.

Step 2: Receiving Your Information Pack

After your initial enquiry, we will send you our Foster Carer Information Pack. This pack provides a detailed understanding of fostering, including:

  • The different types of fostering
  • The financial support and allowances available
  • The training and ongoing support we provide
  • The full process of becoming an approved foster carer

Reading through this information will help you make an informed decision and give you a clearer idea of what to expect.

Step 3: Home Visit

Once you have reviewed the information pack and are ready to proceed, Louise will visit you at home. This is a great opportunity for us to:

  • Get to know you and your family
  • Discuss your lifestyle & experiences
  • Answer any questions you may have

This visit also ensures your home is a safe and welcoming environment for a child. We will talk through your experiences, lifestyle, and expectations as a foster carer.

At Foster Cares Ltd, we focus on matching the right carers with the right children. This visit helps us understand more about you, so we can ensure a strong and successful placement when the time comes.

Step 4: Skills to Foster Training

If you decide to move forward, you will be invited to attend our Skills to Foster training course. This training helps you fully understand the role of a foster carer and equips you with the knowledge and tools to support children in care.

During the training, you will learn about:

  • What foster carers do – Understanding the role, responsibilities, and daily life of a foster carer
  • Identity and life chances – How a child’s background shapes their experiences and needs
  • Working with others – How to collaborate with social workers, schools, and birth families
  • Understanding and caring for children – Supporting children with trauma, loss, and attachment needs
  • Safer caring – Ensuring safety and boundaries within your home
  • Transitions – Helping children adjust when moving into or out of foster care

This training is delivered in a friendly and supportive setting, where you will also meet other prospective foster carers. Many of our carers find this course invaluable in preparing them for their fostering journey.

Step 5: The Assessment Process

After completing the training, you will begin the assessment process. This involves regular meetings with an assessing social worker, who will get to know you and your family in more detail. The assessment includes:

  • A series of home visits
  • Interviews with you and your household members
  • Background checks and references

We understand that assessments can feel daunting, but there is no need to worry. This process is designed to ensure fostering is right for you and to help us match you with a child who will thrive in your care.

Step 6: The Fostering Panel

Once your assessment is complete, your application will be presented to a fostering panel. This panel is made up of professionals from different backgrounds who will:

  • Review your application
  • Discuss your strengths as a foster carer
  • Make a recommendation about your approval

This is a positive and supportive process, ensuring you are well-prepared for fostering. Once approved, you will officially become part of the Foster Cares Ltd family, and we will begin matching you with a child.

Step 7: Welcoming a Child Into Your Home

Once approved, the most exciting part of your journey begins – welcoming a child into your home.

At Foster Cares Ltd, we carefully match children with foster carers to ensure the best possible fit for both you and the child.

To support you, we will appoint a Supervising Social Worker, who will be your main point of contact. Their role is to guide and support you, ensuring you have everything you need. The child will also have their own social worker from the local authority, responsible for their care plan and wellbeing.

The first few days can be a period of adjustment, but you will never be alone – we are here to help you every step of the way twenty four hours of the day.

Step 8: Ongoing Support

Fostering does not end when a child is placed in your home – our support is continuous. We offer a family-like support network, ensuring you feel valued, heard, and fully equipped to provide the best care possible.

How we support you:

  • Regular check-ins: Your Supervising Social Worker will visit you regularly and be available to answer any concerns
  • Comprehensive training: We provide ongoing training opportunities to help you develop your skills
  • Carer support meeting: To gain peer support throughout your fostering journey
  • 24/7 support: Our team is available around the clock for advice and assistance
  • Peer support network: Connect with other carers for guidance, encouragement, and shared experiences

When you join Foster Cares Ltd, you join a community of dedicated foster carers who are passionate about making a difference.
