We are thrilled to share the remarkable story of Karen and Kay, two of our dedicated foster carers who embody the essence of diversity and inclusivity. In a recent interview, Karen and Kay opened up about their experiences as foster carers and their journey with Foster Cares Ltd.
Karen and Kay have been fostering for fourteen years and for nine of them have been foster carers with our agency. They spoke about their initial apprehension around the assessment process and questioned if this would have been too intrusive for them as they needed to talk about their personal circumstances with a complete stranger. Karen and Kay both confirmed that although the assessment process can be challenging the assessor made this as easy as possible.

Karen: stated “a recommendation led us to Foster Cares, and we’ve never looked back. The support we received during Karen’s battle with cancer five years ago was phenomenal, not only for the children but for us as well.”
The rewards of fostering are immeasurable, woven through the heart-warming moments that define the journey. Kay said: “Our experience changed when we switched agencies. We welcomed a sibling group of four, and we’ve seen them grow over the years. Our family has become a mix of biological and foster children, creating a truly unique and lively household.”
Challenges are part of the fostering landscape, often rooted in misconceptions that society perpetuates. Karen and Kay actively work to challenge these stereotypes, seeing each child as an individual with unique needs and strengths. Karen stated: “Fostering challenges often stem from misconceptions. Society tends to stereotype children in care, which we actively work to change. Each child is unique, and we’ve put in a lot of effort to dispel these stereotypes and offer them individualized care.”
The journey of fostering isn’t without its hurdles, but Karen and Kay’s story stands as an inspiration to those considering becoming foster carers. It’s about embracing the journey with an open heart, seeking guidance, and becoming part of a family that champions diversity and inclusion.
